30 Days to 30 – Age 11

First, Don’t forget to enter this week’s 30 Days to 30 Giveaway! Now, on to the memories!

Memory #12 – age 11 yrs

Thus begins the cheerleading years. My cousin Angie convinced me that I should try-out for the PeeWee Football Cheerleading team the summer I turned 11. And I did. And I made the team.

Most of the other girls on the team were all older than me. So, it was no surprise that I got my first real boyfriend (more than just passing notes through friends). His name was Jim. He was nearly as short as I was so we were a perfect match. I have a lot of great memories of Jim, including my first kiss…..

So, I actually have a story about why I ended up staying with cheerleading, besides my cousin getting me to try out and the other girls convincing me to come back the next year. This is a sad story….let me grab the kleenex.

Our old 5th grade teacher (Mr. Cox) used to hold afterschool basketball clinics for the 6th grade girls to prepare them for the 7th grade basketball try-outs. I went to these clinics because I really wanted to try-out for the team. That was until Mr. Cox pulled me aside one afternoon and said, “Stacey, I can see you are trying really hard and I’m glad to see you here week after week, but you’re just too short to play basketball.” OUCH! Needless to say, that scared me for life and I never played basketball (for a team) again. So I stuck with cheerleading, which was probably a much better choice for me anyhow!

This picture is of me and Lissy….totally being the 6th grade bad-asses that we were!
Oh wait! I do have a better memory from this year! The school talent show!!! LIssy, Mandy, Missy, and I totally rocked the talent show with a dance routine to “Bat Dance” from the movie “Batman”. Oh yes, rocked it. Complete with Mandy as Bruce Wayne, Missy and Vicky Vale, and Lis and myself wearing white face paint as the Joker. First place baby! Of course my sister and her crew came in second but they probably deserved first.
