30 Days to 30 – Age 18

Memory #19 – age 18 yrs

I turned 18 the summer between graduating from high school and leaving for college. Of course I was sad to be separating from my best friends (Lissy and Missy, seen below) but I was excited to be getting out of our small town. I ended up at a college 5 hours away, which meant I really didn’t come home that often. This was probably a good thing.
Like most people, that first year of college shifted my world and my views on life. For the first time I was in a place where no one knew me or my family. No one from my high school had gone to or was going to this college. I was starting with a clean slate and I had no idea what to do with that.

My life shifted again that year when the boyfriend became the ex-boyfriend. Long story but he ended up switching colleges that year (actually closer to where I was), started drinking, cheated, I found out, and then broke up with him. Such is life.

Spring break I ended driving down to Florida with my mom to meet up with my grandparents and sister. It was such a great experience just being with my mom for that drive.

At the end of my freshman year I was convinced that this particular college was not for me. I wanted to transfer. I’m not sure if was because I was homesick, depressed about the whole boyfriend thing, or just wasn’t sure who I was or what I was doing. But, after much thinking about it and the flip of a coin (which I think my mom lied to me about the results of that flip) I ended up going back to the same college.
