The 140 Conference Detroit

This week I had the opportunity to attend the 140 Conference in Detroit with Julie (@dutchbeingme), a friend I met through Gleek Retreat and the West MI Bloggers. The 140 Conference is a day-long conference that travels from city to city, focusing around Social Media or Real-Time Media, specifically Twitter. Yes, there are conferences for just about everything these days!

This conference was quite a bit different than any of the other blogging conferences I’ve been to. But just as beneficial! The general format of the day was to have speakers or panels share their thoughts in 10 minute (15 min for panels) segments. This is quite a bit different from the 45 minute or hour sessions I’m used to sitting through at conferences. The 10-15 minute talks worked out quite well! There were some speakers that I wished could have talked longer and there were others that I was glad they only had that shorter amount of time.

The topics covered throughout the day were everything from Social Media in Healthcare, Faith and Education to how Social Media is making a difference in our communities. While there is just no way to give you a complete run down of everything that was covered or said at the #140Conf, here are a few quick highlights:

  • Meeting Jeff Pulver, founder of #140Conf
  • Listening to speakers like Stephen Clark (creator of the #BackChannel), Hajj Flemings (founder of Brand Camp), David Murray (founder of Social Media Club Detroit), and Chris Brogan.
  • Getting a sneak preview of Andy Grammer‘s new interactive music video — you must check this out when it debuts on Monday!
  • Having lunch (at Hockey Town Cafe) and catching up with Courtney, Sandy, Melissa, Nicole, and Katherine.
  • Meeting the lovely @mabelhood and @mumby!
  • Listening to the fabulous @AnissaMayhew share her story.  I won’t say that she is an inspiration because I don’t want her to punch my baby.  But I will say that her realness and candidness makes her awesome!
  • Being downtown Detroit and spending the day in the stunning Fillmore!

Overall, it was a great trip and a great conference!  I love being in that learning environment and am so glad I got to sneak in one last conference before I become too pregnant to travel!

You can learn more about the conference and it’s upcoming locations (or try to get them to come to your area) at 140Conf.com.

  • Sounds like it was a great day! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I really hope to find time for another conference before Gleek Retreat 2011!!

  • It really was an interesting conference and I’m glad I took the opportunity to go. I’m sure I won’t find another one to go to until Gleek Retreat now with the baby coming in Feb. But you never know!
