Giving Back: The Humane Society (#ILoveMyDog)

Last month I really didn’t get an opportunity to do a “Give Back” project with the girls.  Or I should say that I didn’t make an opportunity to do a “Give Back” project.  Honestly, I was a bit preoccupied with preparing for, having, and bringing home baby.  But, it’s a new month, we’re slowly settling in to being a family of five, and it’s time to get back on track!

This month we gave back to our local animal shelter, Harbor Humane Society, in part of a campaign with the new Kibbles ‘n Bits Bistro Meals dog food.

Although Jasper, our nearly 2 year old Boxer, was not a humane society rescue, I have a huge appreciation for what our local humane societies are doing.  Nine years ago, right before Tim and I got married, we adopted two little kittens from the Harbor Humane Society.  The entire adoption experience was absolutely great and, hopefully, we’ll have the chance to adopt a future pet from the humane society.  (We actually had to give the cats to Tim’s cousins after some cat/baby jealousy issues came up when Abbi was born.)

So, for our March “Give Back” project we headed to Walmart to check out the new Kibbles ‘n Bits Bistro Meals dog food and pick up a few bags to donate to the humane society.  The food comes in both 3lb and 16lb bags and a variety of flavors, but for our purposes we bought a few of the 3lb bags…that way the girls could each carry in and donate their own bag when we went to the humane society.  It’s all about keeping the peace!

You can check out our entire shopping and donating experience on Whrrl, where you can also join the “I Love My Dog” Society:

Of course Jasper thought he should get his own bag, too! Honestly, having a dog is like having another kid some times!

With Kibbles ‘n Bits Bistro Meals in hand, the girls were ready to make their donation at the Harbor Humane Society.  The ladies at the humane society were very appreciative of our donation (they can always use food and supplies for those little creatures) and offered to let the girls check out the puppies/dogs and kittens/cats for as long as we like.

On the way home we got to talk a lot about why the animals were at the shelter and how the humane society takes care of them until someone comes in to adopt them and take them home.  Abbi was very proud that her donation would help feed some of the dogs until they got to go home with someone!

* You should know….I was compensated by Del Monte for my time to shop for and try out Kibbles ‘n Bits Bistro Meals.  However, all opinions stated here are my own and are not affected by compensation.
