14 Weeks of Summer: Get into the act!

Our family loves theater — live theater, movie theaters…love it all! And Summer is a great time to especially check out live theater because there are a ton of productions catering to families and kids during the summer!  And, with releases like Cars 2, Winnie The Pooh, and The Smurfs hitting the big screen in the coming months, making a trip to the theater is a spectacular way to escape the heat!

Live Theater

** Free Performance of Little Red Riding Hood ** Wednesday, June 22!

Hope Summer Repertory TheatreThis is one of our favorite theater troupes! They offer both adult and children productions. Shows take place on the Hope College campus and feature some of the most talented actors! The children’s productions this year include How I Became a Pirate and The Borrowers.

Holland Civic CenterThis summer’s productions include The Frog Princess (running through July) and Into The Woods (running through August). Into the Woods sounds fun, as it is an intertwining of plots from some of our favorite fairy tales!

Master Arts TheaterThe Emperor’s New Clothes showing July 22 – 30 (Grand Rapids). Love this story!

Grand Rapids Civic Theater — I’m really excited about their Summer productions: Hairspray (June 10 – July 2), James and the Giant Peach (July 30, August 3, 5, 7), Fame (July 29, 31, August 4, 6)

Circle Theater — In addition to their regular line up, they will be doing Summer productions of Robin Hood And The Heroes of Sherwood Forest (June 29 – July 2) and HONK! (a family musical, July 14-16, 34, 30).  HONK! looks really cute!

I LOVE that we have “Broadway Grand Rapids”! It gives people, especially families, the chance to see big stage productions right here in our area!  This Summer they are presenting Shrek The Musical! Your family can check out their favorite lovable ogre and donkey, but you better act fast! Shows are June 21-26, with a special Kids’ Night on June 22 (you get a free kids ticket when you purchase an adult ticket and more fun events).

** I’ll be posting a review of this show later this week! **

River City Improv — Interested in something other than musicals and plays? Check out this fun Christian comedy group!  They perform at Calvin College and have shows on June 25, July 16, and August 20!

You can also check out the Cult Classics that are shown each weekend at Celebration! Cinemas.  Tickets are only $4! Not all films are going to work for a family night out, but they will be showing some great classics like The Princess Bride and Jurassic Park!

Speaking of classics…the Knickerbocker Theater (downtown Holland) is showing a FREE movie each Thursday at 8pm through July 7.  Remaining movies include A Bug’s Life, Wall-E, and Finding Nemo!  Did I mention that they were FREE!!!

Of course there also a ton of fun family films hitting dvd this summer, so you could always create your own little movie theater fun in your living room.  Better yet…If you can get your hands on a projector, have a little “drive-in theater” in your driveway or backyard! First you need to find a projector (check with your friends or maybe work or church) and either attach a dvd player or laptop to the projector.  You can borrow a screen or just hang a white sheet on the garage door or back of the house.  Pop some popcorn, grab a lawn chair, and enjoy a little backyard movie night!

What theater events is your family looking forward to this Summer — live or movie?
