Passion

What are you passionate about? Are you passionate about something? Anything? A lot of things? Are you doing what you’re passionate about?

Passion is such an interesting thing to me. It is defined as a strong and barely controllable emotion; an intense desire or enthusiasm for something. That sounds pretty serious. But, yet, I know people who are passionate about things.  I know Jack Hannah is passionate about conservation and animals. I know Lance Armstrong is passionate about cycling. And my friend Jody is passionate about showing the love of Jesus to pregnant and parenting teens.

I don’t know what I’m passionate about.  I don’t know that I’m passionate about anything.

My husband asks me, quite often, what I’m passionate about. What do I really want to do? And I can’t give him an answer. And that is sad.

The problem is that I’m 32 years old now. I’m not fresh out of high school or college, with the world as one big open book before me. I can’t just toss all responsibilities aside and bum around Europe, hoping to discover me. I can’t even just try out a bunch of random jobs, waiting to see if I find the  right ‘fit’.

I have a family. Kids. A husband. Mortgages. Car payments. I have responsibilities that are beyond me and, with or without passion, I have to tend to them.

Yes, I love my family. My kids and husband are everything. But I also know that I am driven to be something more than a mom and wife. I just don’t know what that is. Although I know that it will not be something that takes me away from my role as mom and wife.

It’s just a tricky situation to find oneself in. Trying to discover your passion while staying rooted and grounded to a life you’ve already created. How do you find time to begin to discover that passion between changing diapers and laundry, cooking and cleaning, gymnastics classes and kindergarten homework? And when you do have time, a few moments between it all, aren’t you too exhausted to look?

I’m curious, do you have a passion? Are you passionate about something in life? And when did you discover that passion?

  • I totally get this. I hate it when people ask me that question, because I’m like, “Ummmm….?” I was passionate about some things once, but it’s all be pushed aside by motherhood. Maybe I’ll find it again when they go to college.

  • Exactly! It’s tough trying to find that balance between being a mom and being something other than a mom.
